Killer dad smothered baby son to death in rage ‘triggered by smoking cannabis every day’
Kane Kennedy, 20, was ordered to serve at least 18 years behind bars after he was convicted of murdering seven-month-old Oskar Jobey-Kennedy.
Court heard Kennedy would snap after smoking cannabis and go off on violent temper tantrums when the baby started crying.
The baby’s teenage mum told him to give up his habit over fears for the child’s safety, but Kennedy refused and threw the tot round “like a toy” and pushed his fingers down his throat “to silence him”.
Oskar was found unresponsive at the couple’s flat in Morecambe, Lancashire, in October last year and was rushed to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, where he was pronounced dead despite attempts to revive him.
A post-mortem revealed he died from smothering and had non-accidental injuries to his genitals, mouth and oesophagus.
Police discovered in the days before the killing Kennedy had swapped Facebook messages with Oskar’s mother, Tia Jobey, 19, in which she said he was a “depressed, horrible, abusive d*** after the weed”.
The messages also revealed claims the child was being abused.
In one post Jobey wrote: “You can’t control your anger because of the weed I just want you to be a f***ing normal person.
“If you’re not willing to be the man for me and for Oscar then I’m done. You make your decision and stick with it once you have made it there’s no going back.”
Another read: “I’m trying to make sure Oskar is happy and safe and while you are addicted to weed and violent and abusive he’s not safe at all.
“You throw him around like a toy, suffocate him, stick your finger down his f***ing throat! And he’s always in the middle of our arguments and fights. If you aren’t going to protect your son and be a f***ing dad then I’m leaving.”
A third posting read: “If you want to be in our lives if you really care about me and our son you would quit. You come home and suffocate our son because you can’t be arsed with him because you want weed.”
At Preston Crown Court Kennedy was convicted of murder and was ordered to serve a minimum of 18 years.
Jobey pleaded guilty to causing or allowing the death of a child in court at an earlier hearing and was jailed for 30 months.
In some of the messages read to a jury, Jobey wrote that she had to make excuses for her son’s injuries in order to hide the abuse.
She wrote: “I don’t want you stressing out on Oscar. What if one day he p*sses you off so much and you grab his arm like you grab mine and twist it and break it? You’re not going to touch my baby in the wrong way ever again.
“I’m never going to let you talk to let alone touch him like that ever again. I’m sick of having to pretend he’s just bumping stuff when really it’s you. His arm? His lip? Twice you suffocated him Kane. That’s child abuse.”
She added: “I don’t care if he can breath [sic] you find it funny. If I saw someone doing that I would ring the police because it’s evil. He can’t help himself, he’s helpless, screaming and scared. You covered his mouth laughing. I shouldn’t let you anywhere near him but I’m giving you the choice to be a dad.”
The couple rowed six days after the messages, and the following morning Kennedy rang 999 saying: “I’ve woke up, I’ve woke up, I’ve woke up, I’ve fallen asleep. I’ve woke up this morning and fell asleep on the couch with my son last night and I’ve woke up and he’s not f***ing breathing.”
Despite the tragedy the couple continued their relationship and in February learned they were expecting a second child.
But just two weeks later he was arrested on suspicion of murder. Jobey has since given birth to their second child.
In police interview, Kennedy, who denied murder, told officers he fell asleep with the tot under his arm and woke to find him not breathing.
In court he changed his story, claiming his son had been asleep on sofa with Jobey – whilst he slept in a bedroom. He accused Oskar’s mother of causing the baby’s death.
